Journalist – £10m PL star prepared to sign for Man Utd – Reds readying a bid

Sergio Reguilon Tottenham Defender

Sergio Reguilon was once considered good enough to displace Brazilian legend Marcelo from the Real Madrid starting XI. When he signed for Tottenham Hotspur, the North London club were lauded for signing one of the most talented Spaniards of his generation.

However, the 27-year-old has had a torrid time at the N17. Going forward, Reguilon is still exceptional and his ability to contribute with assists is underrated. In the Premier League though, he was found wanting defensively.

Playing under defensively-minded coaches like Nuno Espirito Santos, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte certainly did not help the player either.

Ange Postecoglou was expected to offer him a new lease of life but Destiny Udogie leapfrogged him to the starting berth.

Interestingly, Reguilon had two loan spells away from Spurs last season – at Man Utd and Brentford. He proved to be top class for the Bees, yet he has failed to find himself a new home nor is Postecoglou willing to give him a chance.

As per Fabrizio Romano, however, Reguilon would love to return to Man Utd. We covered a story earlier this month that the Red Devils were planning to make a bid for the Spaniard, for whom Spaniard, for whom Spurs would gladly accept £10m.

Now, Romano has offered his two cents on the situation.

“Sergio Reguilon was very happy at Manchester United. So if tomorrow, Man United decide to return for Sergio Reguilon, the player will be keen on the move. He loved his time at Manchester United, was a short time, but he was very happy with the club, with the tactical ideas and with all the points involved in Manchester United.”

Man Utd have Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia in the squad but Erik ten Hag didn’t have either for almost the entirety of last season. He was forced to resort to quirks like deploying Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat at left-back.

Having someone like Reguilon in the squad would give Erik ten Hag an extra option in case of such a scenario. Considering Shaw can also play at centre-back, the Dutch coach will be able to balance game time for the trio.

At £10m, Reguilon will be a steal, especially if he can show the kind of form he did when breaking through at Real Madrid. It remains to be seen if Man Utd can get a deal done for the Spurs defender this summer.
