It’s fair to say there’s a lot of work to be done over the summer at Old Trafford and one thing’s for sure, there will be plenty of comings and goings.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have his own ideas about where he needs to strengthen, and United fans will likely be among the general consensus.
Who he can bring in will likely depend on where the Reds finish the season. The bookmakers aren’t fancying them for a top four and they’re priced around 8/1 to earn a Champions League slot with bookmaker Betfred.
For those backing them, it’s well worth a punt, particularly with the Coral bet £10 get £30 offer.
After a poor run of results United will welcome two fairly easy games against already relegated Huddersfield and Cardiff. After a run of poor results, the Red Devils will welcome this games which they go into these as favourites with Ladbrokes and other high street bookmakers.
Solskjaer will certainly need to take a punt in the coming months on some talent, but who are the players lined up on key areas?
Right Full Back
Right back has been a problem position for United for a number of seasons now and across the defence the club will be looking to strengthen.
At right back, Thomas Meunier is the man being tipped to solve that problem, with the Belgian not a regular starter at PSG.
The 27-year-old would be keen to join the club and it wouldn’t break the bank to bring him in.
Other names being touted are Kieran Trippier and Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Centre Back
Centre back is another problem position and despite numerous signings from Mourinho, they’ve struggled to find the right combination.
In recent months Lindelof has stepped up, but a world-class defender is required at the club. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly is the man United want, but it will take an awful lot for the Italian side to let him go.
Ajax’s Matthijs de Light is another on the radar at Old Trafford, with the 19-year-old almost certain to leave the Dutch side this summer.
Former striker Dimitar Berbatov certainly believes a major presence at centre half is needed, with the benefits clearly evident from Liverpool’s progress this term.
Midfield
Ole will have a major headache this summer with a number of players potentially leaving. Ander Herrera looks set to quit the Reds, while rumours are spreading that Paul Pogba has agreed a contract with Real Madrid.
Declan Rice is one name being rumoured as a replacement for Nemanja Matic while Nicolas Pepe is one option thought to be being discussed in a £60million deal from Lille.
What is for sure, is that if the club do let Pogba go, they’ll potentially have a £200million warchest from that deal alone, which could significantly strengthen in a number of areas. Toni Kroos could be an option to come the other way, but that may be more wishful thinking on Solskjaer’s part.
Of course, the rumour mill is going to continue to hot up. If Pogba stays, United could look to spend £128million on Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez. That would be a huge coup for the Reds, while if David De Gea leaves Old Trafford, the club are also willing to pay the release fee of Slovakian goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
There’s a lot of work to be done over the coming months, but with a few key signings, progress can be made next term, and another step closer to winning trophies once again.
