Man Utd line up last-minute deal to sign £40million+ forward – Report

Calvert-Lewin Everton Forward

One could have been forgiven for assuming that Manuel Ugarte would be Man Utd’s last piece of transfer business in terms of arrival this summer. The Red Devils had agreed to an initial £42m fee to secure the Uruguayan’s signature from PSG.

However, the Red Devils don’t seem to be done for the transfer window, which is quite surprising. We covered a story earlier today that Man Utd wanted to make a push to sign Chelsea star Raheem Sterling in a swap deal with Jadon Sancho.

Now, as per Football Insider, Man Utd are lining up a last-minute deal to sign Evertonian striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The report adds that Newcastle United also want to make a transfer happen for the Toffees contract rebel.

Chelsea is also a potential destination for the 27-year-old but the Blues prioritize a transfer for Ivan Toney as things stand. Calvert-Lewin’s contract at Goodison Park expires in less than 12 months and he has rejected multiple renewal offers from the club.

Once touted to become one of the most clinical strikers in the Premier League, injuries have prevented the 27-year-old from reaching the heights envisioned for him. Despite this, he continues to remain a lethal goalscorer and is one of the best headers in the league.

Man Utd have already signed a striker this summer in Joshua Zirkzee who has made a flying start to his Old Trafford career. The Red Devils also signed Rasmus Hojlund last season from Atalanta and he is currently recovering from an injury.

Erik ten Hag’s squad do not need a striker at the moment and even if they do, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not the solution. Everton are asking for more than £40m to part ways with the Englishman this summer and Man Utd have no necessity to make such an investment.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a project player. Man Utd’s project doesn’t suit the style of game that the lanky striker tends to play and the Red Devils would be better of steering clear of his signature and giving Newcastle a free run at him in the coming days.
