Roma are keen on bringing Anthony Martial to Stadio Olimpico in this transfer window, and after Man United rejected their loan inquiry, the Italian giants could be up for the permanent deal.
The Giallorossi are desperate to add a new winger following Mohamed Salah’s departure for Liverpool, and with the sale of Antonio Rudiger to Chelsea, they surely have enough money to strike the deal. It is reported that Manchester will be asking at least £30 million for the French forward, even though they bought him for £38 million up-front two years ago. With the various add-ons in his contract, this figure could go up to £56 million.
Jose Mourinho is looking to bolster his squad with a reported pursue of the Croatian international Ivan Perisic and selling Martial would not be surprising. However, the 21-year-old Frenchman is included in Man United’s pre-season squad as no official bid came from Roma’s side yet. Martial had an impressive year when he joined United from Monaco in 2015 and scored 17 goals in all competitions, but with Mourinho’s arrival, his playing time was evidently reduced.
He recorded only eight goals in 42 matches last season and failed to cement his place in the starting eleven, so if Perisic makes his move to Old Trafford, Martial could be forced to try his luck elsewhere. With the emergence of the young sensation Marcus Rashford, Martial’s place in the team was additionally questioned, and although plenty of Man United fans will not agree with it, it’s maybe the best time for him to go.
Still, the season is quite long, and the Red Devils are fighting on four fronts this year so Martial will get the playing time. But the inconsistency and lack of composure in front of the goal could send him to the bench as it was the case last term when Mourinho lost patience with him.
